The strong never lasts forever. It is the same for the entertainment industry where the trend changes rapidly and the future is more unpredictable compared to other fields. It’s undeniable that the top three agencies—SM, YG and JYP—are leading the industry both in sales and ability in planning and marketing.
However, there are still other smaller agencies which have squeezed themselves in between and gradually becoming a threat to the major three. And that’s why TenAsia English decided to go over these rising mid-sized agencies.
We made a list of our comprehensive comments of their movements so far, plus cool-headed evaluations and advice on their strengths and weak points and accidental outcomes. From today, we’ll be highlighting a total of 12 mid-sized entertainment agencies striving to rise to the top in the cutthroat entertainment world here in Korea.
BEAST, 4minute, BTOB, A PINK, G.NA, Roh Ji-hoon, Huh Gak
The quantitative growth is as much as the top three major firms–various kinds of artists from boy bands, girl groups and solo artists; its sub-label A CUBE Entertainment; scouted a winner of a TV audition program, Huh Gak.
However, 4minute and G.NA failed to score additional hits after their early hits such as “Hot Issue” and “I’ll Get Lost, You Go Your Way,” respectively. BEAST is currently devoting themselves to overseas activities and are not focusing on the domestic market. Going beyond discovering new talents and developing their pies, it’s time for them to pop their next big shot, like “Trouble Maker.”
A Magic Touch
“Trouble Maker,” which imprinted Hyuna of 4minute as a sexy icon following Lee Hyori and making Hyun-seung of BEAST become more recognized. The twosome’s sensual performance, such as their two lips almost touching each other, got a great level of attention as much as the one by Lee Hyori and T.O.P of Big Bang. This excellent sub-unit received the Best Collaboration Award at the 2012 Mnet Asian Music Award.
A Surprising Move
Eunji of A PINK appearing in the tvN series “Reply 1997.” The series kicked off with several risks of its own such as being a cable drama, a former variety show producer’s first drama and it was also the idol singer’s first acting job. However, Eunji got the biggest benefit from the series after depicting a girl-next-door character named Seong Si-won, who calls herself as a wife of Tony, member of 90’s top boy band H.O.T.
The Boss’ Mistake
Hyuna’s version of “Gangnam Style.” It was a smart move to try to make full use of the global PSY syndrome, but Hyuna’s extreme high tone voice was grating to the ears of many around the world.
